New lift truck productivity test certified by TUEV makes productivity an objective criterion for decision-making

Higher productivity, lower costs

In difficult economic times, each decision to invest is examined even more carefully. By achieving TÜV certification for the lift truck productivity test, Linde Material Handling has succeeded in establishing an independently verifiable performance factor (productivity over time) as a basis for cost analysis, and therefore as an objective decision-making parameter. This provides operators with the chance to take the productivity of a truck into account when calculating staffing, purchasing, financing, service and energy costs, and therefore to ultimately calculate the actual costs.

When it comes to purchasing new industrial trucks, most investment decisions are based on purchasing, energy consumption, service and financing costs taken from type sheets and written quotations. But appearances can be deceptive. The truck costs, which are also often described as "total cost of ownership", actually represent only a part of the actual costs. The productivity of a truck over a certain period of time is not taken into account. The time a truck needs to carry out a certain task when transferring goods internally has a very significant effect on the individual costs. And this even applies if the truck is not in use continuously, but is parked in a corner every once in a while. For example, if a truck works faster, the driver could be busy doing other jobs in the time "saved". The reduced number of total operating hours increases staff efficiency and also reduces energy and service costs as well as mainte-nance work. Reduced operating hours are ultimately reflected in a higher residual value. Taking productivity into account when calculating expenses in industrial trucks is known at Linde as T.O.P.: "Total Operating Performance"

Due to the significance of truck productivity in the calculation of actual truck costs, Linde Material Handling decided to work in cooperation with a recognised partner to develop and seek certification for an objective forklift truck performance test derived from typical practical ap-plications in industry and trade. That recognised partner was TÜV Nord Mobilität GmbH & Co. KG, and by issuing certificate number LS 0109684Z1, it attested that the productivity over time and the energy consumption for forklift trucks can be calculated under realistic operat-ing conditions using the "lift truck productivity test".

For this test, a lorry is loaded and unloaded with 12 crates. The weight of each crate is approximately 800 kilograms. The lift truck productivity test is operated at full power and under timed conditions, so that all the essential factors (time, pallet capacity and consumption) can be measured and/or calculated. In order to be able to produce a meaningful evaluation, the time taken for each work cycle, the weight of the tank before and after each work cycle for diesel/gas-powered vehicles or the electricity flow for electric trucks and the ambient temperature and fuel temperature are documented. To evaluate the data taken, the times and consumption figures are converted to a figure per pallet and then extrapolated for the required number of pallets or time window.

By achieving TUEV certification for the lift truck productivity test, Linde Material Handling has succeeded in establishing an independently verifiable performance factor (productivity over time) as a basis for cost analysis, and therefore as an objective decision-making parameter.

"By certifying our lift truck productivity test, we now have an objective parameter for the productivity of a truck, and we can show our customers using concrete examples how much money they will save by using a Linde truck", said Theodor Maurer, member of the Management Board at Linde Material Handling, addressing representatives of the trade press. "These savings amount to 10–30% per year depending on the individual model. In concrete terms, this means that up to EUR 15,000 can be saved by using a Linde truck."
